Surface-water Hydrology, Water Resources 61 History of basin wetlands The Maumee River basin in Indiana historically contained a section of the ancient Lake Maumee, a predecessor to modern Lake Erie. As the lake reced-ed, it left an area of poorly drained soils which early settlers referred to as the Black Swamp (Homoya and others, ). We also took lake bed sediment cores for heavy metal analysis. Currently, our lab possesses the most comprehensive information on long-term hydrology and water quality of the Baton Rouge City/LSU Lakes. We use the data in developing water quality models for this unique urban lake system, as well as in teaching to train students in advanced.
